OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney will address the European Parliament next month as Canada moves to deepen its relationship with Europe amid an increasingly difficult trade relationship with the United States.

Carney is scheduled to travel to Strasbourg in September and will also attend the European Union's annual State of the Union address on September 16, where he will be a guest of honour. He is expected to address European lawmakers the following day.

The visit comes as Canada seeks to diversify its trade and strengthen strategic partnerships beyond the United States following the collapse of recent Canada-U.S. trade negotiations and the introduction of new American tariffs.

Ottawa and Brussels have been expanding cooperation in areas including trade, defence, energy and security. Canada has also joined a European defence financing initiative and is pursuing closer strategic ties with EU member states.

Carney has made reducing Canada's economic dependence on the U.S. a major priority, with the government seeking to expand non-U.S. exports over the coming decade.

The European visit could become an important diplomatic moment for Canada as Ottawa looks to turn closer European relations into new economic and strategic opportunities.
