Ericsson Canada and École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) in Montreal have launched a research collaboration aimed at improving how quantum computing could support future telecommunications networks.

Announced on October 22, 2026, the partnership brings together Ericsson’s quantum research team and researchers at ÉTS, with support from the Mitacs Accelerate program. The project will explore computational methods designed to improve the reliability and performance of quantum algorithms.

The research focuses on variational quantum algorithms and techniques for reducing computational errors and improving optimization. In the longer term, these methods could help researchers investigate ways to manage complex telecommunications networks more efficiently.

The initiative will also give students and researchers opportunities to work alongside industry specialists on quantum hardware and simulations, helping develop skills for Canada’s emerging quantum technology sector.

The collaboration is part of a broader effort to move quantum computing from theoretical research towards practical applications. However, the project remains research-focused, and it is too early to conclude that it will produce immediate improvements to commercial telecom services.

The partnership strengthens Montreal’s position in Canada’s quantum research ecosystem and highlights the role of cooperation between universities, technology companies and research-funding organizations in developing next-generation digital infrastructure.
