Toronto police are searching for suspects in an elaborate fraud investigation after a woman allegedly lost more than C$200,000 to individuals posing as a police detective and a judge.
The investigation began on October 5 after the woman reported a suspected contractor fraud in the area of Lake Shore Boulevard West and Royal York Road. Police say she hired contractors for home improvements but was misled about the repairs required, resulting in costs substantially higher than quoted.
Investigators allege the woman was subsequently contacted by a man claiming to be a Toronto police detective named “Philip Spring.” He allegedly told her the contractors were under investigation for fraud. Another man then claimed to be a judge named “Stephen Firestone” and allegedly persuaded her to provide money, promising reimbursement through court proceedings.
Police have confirmed that neither identity represents a real Toronto detective or judge. The victim reportedly delivered several bank drafts totalling more than C$200,000.
Investigators believe there may be additional victims and are asking anyone with information to come forward. Police have released an image of the man alleged to have impersonated a detective.
The case highlights the risks of fraud schemes that exploit trust in law enforcement and the justice system. Authorities advise the public to verify unexpected claims of official investigations through independently obtained police or court contact details, and never pay money to resolve an alleged criminal investigation.
