EDMONTON, Alberta — October 10, 2026 The Canadian government has announced more than $15.6 million in federal funding for the Canadian Red Cross to strengthen emergency-response capacity and help communities prepare for disasters.
Public Safety Canada announced the investment on October 9 through the Humanitarian Workforce Program, which supports the people and resources needed to respond when emergencies occur. The funding is the first project announced under a renewed $108 million federal commitment to improve Canada’s disaster-response capacity.
The investment comes as Canadian communities face the ongoing challenge of preparing for emergencies such as floods, wildfires and other major disruptions. A well-supported humanitarian workforce can help deliver emergency assistance, coordinate relief operations and support affected residents.
The funding is intended to strengthen preparedness before disasters strike, rather than respond to one specific emergency. Public Safety Canada says additional projects under the renewed program are expected to be announced.
The announcement places renewed attention on Canada’s emergency-readiness infrastructure and the role of humanitarian organisations in supporting communities during crises.
