OTTAWA — Canada and Germany have signed a new General Security of Information Agreement aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two countries on sensitive information, security and economic interests.
The agreement was announced by the Government of Canada on September 25, 2026, as Ottawa continues to deepen ties with European partners. The government said the agreement is intended to create new opportunities for cooperation in areas where security and innovation are important to economic growth.
Canada and Germany are marking 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2026. Germany is also Canada's largest trading partner within the European Union, with bilateral merchandise trade reaching $34.2 billion in 2025, according to Global Affairs Canada.
The agreement comes as both countries continue cooperation on defence, energy security, critical minerals, trade, investment, artificial intelligence and support for Ukraine.
The new security arrangement adds another layer to the Canada-Germany relationship as Ottawa works to strengthen partnerships with European allies.
The agreement is expected to support closer Canada-Germany cooperation on security and economic priorities.
