OTTAWA — Vietnam’s General Secretary and President Tô Lâm has arrived in Ottawa for a state visit to Canada, putting Canada-Vietnam relations in focus as both countries seek deeper cooperation in trade, investment and the Indo-Pacific region.

Tô Lâm arrived at Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport on September 23 and began his official visit at the invitation of Canadian Governor General Louise Arbour.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to welcome Tô Lâm at Parliament Hill on September 24, followed by a formal welcome ceremony and bilateral meeting. A state dinner hosted by Governor General Arbour is also scheduled for Thursday evening.

The Canadian government has described Vietnam as an important Indo-Pacific partner, with existing cooperation covering trade, economic relations, energy security and climate action.

The visit comes as Canada continues expanding economic and diplomatic relationships across the Indo-Pacific. The two countries are expected to focus on opportunities to strengthen bilateral ties and expand practical cooperation.

The Ottawa meetings make the Vietnam-Canada relationship a key diplomatic development in Canada today.
