Canadian military officials say a deadly fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta was linked to live-grenade training, as investigators continue examining the incident that killed four soldiers and injured dozens of others.
The fire erupted during a live-fire training exercise on October 17. According to officials speaking at an October 22 briefing, the blaze began on a grenade training range before strong winds rapidly spread the flames across the area.
Four Canadian Armed Forces members died, and 39 others sustained injuries. Officials reported that 27 injured personnel remained in hospital following the incident, with 13 in critical condition as of the latest briefing.
Military officials said the location of the fire made it difficult for firefighters to reach and suppress the flames before changing wind conditions pushed the blaze in a new direction. Investigators are continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The incident has raised urgent questions about military training safety, emergency response and fire risks during live-ammunition exercises. However, the investigation remains ongoing, and officials have not yet released a final determination on all contributing factors.
The Canadian Armed Forces is supporting affected personnel and their families while the investigation proceeds. Further findings are expected to clarify how the fire developed and what measures may be needed to reduce the risk of similar incidents.
