Canadian technology company Calian Group has partnered with Space Innovation Canada to advance a proposed Prairie-based platform for testing space, defence and other advanced technologies before they enter operational use.
Announced in Ottawa on October 19, the collaboration aims to address a gap in Canada’s innovation sector: access to repeatable testing environments where emerging technologies can be evaluated under demanding conditions.
The proposed platform would use high-altitude balloons, sounding rockets and other flight systems to test technologies involving satellite communications, navigation, sensors, advanced materials and scientific research. These tests could help Canadian developers demonstrate performance and reliability before pursuing commercial deployment or government procurement opportunities.
Calian will contribute technical, strategic and commercial expertise, drawing on more than four decades of experience in mission-critical solutions. Space Innovation Canada will lead the initiative, bringing together businesses, researchers, government organizations and Indigenous communities.
The project is still in the development stage, rather than an operational testing facility already available to companies. Its progress will depend on partnerships, planning and implementation.
If developed successfully, the platform could give Canadian technology firms and researchers greater domestic access to specialized testing, helping promising innovations move more efficiently from laboratory development toward real-world applications.
