The federal government has announced nearly $2 million in new funding for Halifax-area initiatives aimed at preventing gun and gang violence.
Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree announced the funding in Dartmouth on September 29. The money will support community programs designed to address factors associated with youth involvement in crime and provide children, youth and young adults with safer opportunities and support networks.
The funding will be delivered through the federal Build Safer Communities Fund, which is part of a broader $157.5-million national commitment over three years. Halifax Regional Municipality has already received more than $3 million through an earlier phase of the program since 2022.
Local initiatives supported by the funding can include youth mentorship, crisis de-escalation, educational resources, mental-health supports and programs addressing issues such as trafficking and sexual exploitation.
Federal and municipal officials said the investment is intended to strengthen community organizations and create additional pathways for young people away from involvement with guns and gangs.
