Toronto’s Nathan Phillips Square is hosting the Indigenous Legacy Gathering from September 28 to September 30, bringing Indigenous culture, storytelling, music and community programming into the heart of the city.

The ninth annual gathering, hosted by the Toronto Council Fire Native Cultural Centre, coincides with the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30. This year’s theme, wahkôhtowin, refers to the interconnectedness of people, animals, land and the spirit world.

The public event features cultural teachings, workshops, storytelling, dance, music, food and an Indigenous marketplace featuring local artisans and vendors. Tipis hosted by Indigenous community organizations are also part of the gathering.

A sacred fire is being maintained throughout the event, while daily sunrise ceremonies and evening performances provide additional opportunities for cultural learning and community participation.

The gathering comes as communities across Canada prepare for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, creating a public space in Toronto for cultural exchange, remembrance and intergenerational learning.
