A new analysis has found that more than 12,000 excess deaths were recorded across Europe during the severe June heatwave, underscoring the growing public health risks posed by increasingly frequent and intense periods of extreme heat.

Researchers say the prolonged high temperatures affected millions of people across several European countries, placing significant strain on healthcare systems and increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses. Older adults, individuals with pre-existing medical conditions and vulnerable communities were among those most affected.

The study suggests that many of the excess deaths were linked directly or indirectly to prolonged exposure to extreme heat, which can worsen cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, lead to dehydration and increase the likelihood of heatstroke.

Scientists have warned that climate change is making heatwaves more frequent, longer-lasting and more intense. They argue that without stronger climate adaptation measures—including improved heat warning systems, urban cooling initiatives and better protection for vulnerable populations—the number of heat-related deaths is likely to rise in the coming years.

Health experts have urged governments to strengthen emergency response plans and invest in public awareness campaigns to help reduce the impact of future heatwaves. Recommended precautions include staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor activity during peak heat, checking on elderly relatives and ensuring access to cool indoor spaces.

The findings add to growing concerns that extreme weather events are becoming one of Europe's most significant public health challenges, reinforcing calls for both climate action and improved preparedness to protect communities from rising temperatures.
