Two men were injured during a stabbing at a Sikh gurdwara in northeast Edmonton early Friday morning as worshippers gathered for prayers ahead of a wedding.

Edmonton Police Service said officers responded shortly after 5 a.m. and arrested a 27-year-old man at the scene. The two injured men, aged 75 and 51, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the suspect has a significant history of violent offences and had been released from a federal institution on August 20, one day before the incident. Charges were still pending at the time of the police briefing.

The Edmonton Police Service's Hate Crimes Unit is involved in the investigation, but authorities have stressed that it is too early to determine whether the incident was hate-motivated or should be classified as a terrorism-related attack.

The incident has prompted concern among members of Edmonton's Sikh community and drawn condemnation from Prime Minister Mark Carney, who described the attack as appalling and said people should be able to feel safe in places of worship.

Investigators are continuing to establish what led to the confrontation and whether the attack was motivated by ideology, hate or another factor.
