A major flooding emergency continues across parts of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, after torrential rainfall damaged roads, bridges and other infrastructure.

Local states of emergency remain in effect in Inverness, Richmond and Victoria counties as crews assess widespread damage and work to reopen affected transportation routes.

More than 200 millimetres of rain fell in some areas, while several communities reported washed-out roads, damaged culverts and dangerous travel conditions.

Nova Scotia officials have urged residents in affected areas to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from flooded or damaged roads.

The flooding has also resulted in a fatality. RCMP said the body of a 46-year-old woman from Cleveland, N.S., was recovered after she was reported missing during the flooding. Police said the death is not considered suspicious.

Although weather warnings for Nova Scotia have been lifted, officials continue to monitor conditions and assess the full scale of infrastructure damage.

Emergency crews and public-works teams are now focused on restoring safe road access and supporting communities affected by the flooding.
