Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberals have opened a 14-point lead over the Conservatives in a new national federal poll, marking a significant shift in the latest Canadian political landscape.

The Liaison Strategies Weekly Federal Tracker, released September 7, puts the Liberals at 45% among decided and leaning voters, compared with 31% for the Conservatives.

The New Democratic Party is at 13%, while the Bloc Québécois has 6%, the Greens 2% and the People’s Party 2%.

Carney’s personal approval rating has also risen to 66%, according to the poll.

The survey is notable because it is the first weekly tracker in which the entire sample was collected after Canada suspended trade negotiations with the United States on August 21 and announced plans to match new U.S. tariffs.

The results suggest that the government's approach to the Canada-U.S. trade dispute is becoming an important factor in national political sentiment.

With trade, affordability and economic security continuing to dominate political debate, the latest numbers could add pressure on opposition parties to sharpen their strategies ahead of the next federal campaign.
