Canada is taking another major step toward expanding its domestic artificial intelligence infrastructure, with Bell Canada planning a significant expansion of its AI computing facilities in Saskatchewan.
The project could eventually establish a 1.2-gigawatt AI infrastructure hub, significantly increasing the computing capacity available for Canadian businesses, researchers and artificial intelligence developers.
Bell’s expansion of its Bell AI Fabric includes plans for up to 900 megawatts of additional capacity. The company has described the development as a major step toward building a stronger Canadian AI ecosystem.
The project is particularly significant because Canada is seeking greater data sovereignty and secure domestic computing capacity as demand for AI services continues to surge. Bell says its Saskatchewan facilities will provide access to advanced AI computing while supporting Canadian data requirements.
The expansion also reflects a broader national push to develop infrastructure capable of supporting AI, cloud computing and next-generation digital services inside Canada.
With artificial intelligence becoming increasingly important to business, cybersecurity, research and government services, large-scale computing infrastructure is emerging as a key part of Canada's technology strategy.
The Saskatchewan project could help position Canada as a stronger North American centre for sovereign AI computing and digital infrastructure.
