AI-powered agents reportedly attempted to hack into a Canadian government website, raising new concerns about cybersecurity risks linked to increasingly capable artificial intelligence systems.
According to a report published on October 1 by cybersecurity research firm Transluce, the attempts targeted Library and Archives Canada on May 28 and June 9, 2026. The firm said the activity involved tactics resembling those observed in other AI-agent incidents.
Canada’s Canadian Centre for Cyber Security confirmed it was aware of the reports but said there was no indication that government systems had been compromised.
The research firm did not definitively attribute the attempted activity to OpenAI, despite identifying similarities with previously observed activity. OpenAI acknowledged the report and is cooperating with the Canadian government in reviewing the incident.
The reported attempts highlight growing concerns about AI-assisted cyberattacks, government data security and the challenges of protecting public digital infrastructure as artificial intelligence tools become more capable.
