A nationally touring Indigenous art exhibition is drawing attention to Canada’s history, cultural heritage and reconciliation as the Witness Blanket goes on display at the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre in Southampton, Ontario.

The exhibition, based on the work of Indigenous artist and master carver Carey Newman (Hayalthkin'geme), opened this week and will remain on view through November 30, 2026.

Inspired by a woven blanket, the cedar-framed artwork incorporates hundreds of items connected to residential schools, Survivors, churches, governments and cultural sites across Canada. Each element contributes to a broader story about loss, resilience, cultural identity and reconciliation.

The Bruce County presentation also includes expanded interpretation connected to the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, linking the national exhibition with local Indigenous history and experiences. Community conversations and educational programming will accompany the display.

On September 17, the museum is also hosting a free screening of Picking Up the Pieces: The Making of the Witness Blanket, followed by a virtual question-and-answer session with a member of the exhibition's collection team.

The exhibition provides visitors with an opportunity to engage with Indigenous storytelling, Canadian history and the ongoing conversation around truth and reconciliation.
