A new federal funding announcement is putting Indigenous performing arts in the spotlight, with a focus on supporting cultural expression and creative communities in Ontario.

Lisa Hepfner, Member of Parliament for Hamilton Mountain, is scheduled to announce federal funding for Indigenous performing arts on October 2 in Ohsweken, within the Six Nations of the Grand River area.

The announcement is being made on behalf of Marc Miller, Canada’s Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages. The event highlights federal support for Indigenous artists and the performing arts sector.

Indigenous performing arts play an important role in preserving and sharing cultural knowledge through storytelling, music, dance and live performance. Funding initiatives can help artists and cultural organizations develop projects, reach audiences and sustain artistic practices across generations.

The announcement comes as cultural organizations and Indigenous communities continue to highlight the importance of representation, heritage preservation and opportunities for Indigenous creative voices.

Further details about the funding amount, recipients and supported projects are expected through the official announcement.
