Vietnamese General Secretary and President Tô Lâm has arrived in Ottawa for a state visit to Canada, beginning a high-level diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

Tô Lâm arrived in Ottawa on September 23 local time ahead of meetings scheduled with Canadian leaders on September 24. Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to greet Tô Lâm at Parliament Hill before holding bilateral talks with the Vietnamese leader.

The visit comes as Canada seeks to strengthen relationships across the Indo-Pacific region. The Canadian government describes Vietnam as an important regional partner and highlights growing cooperation in trade, investment, energy security and climate action.

The two countries have also been expanding economic ties through the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Recent discussions have highlighted opportunities involving trade diversification, technology, energy and supply chains.

Tô Lâm is also scheduled to participate in engagements with Canada's Governor General and other Canadian officials during the Ottawa visit.

The state visit is expected to place Canada–Vietnam relations, Indo-Pacific cooperation and bilateral trade among the key issues receiving attention in Ottawa this week.
