Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and Microsoft Canada have launched a five-year strategic technology partnership aimed at advancing artificial intelligence, cloud computing and data-driven paediatric care.

Announced on October 20, the collaboration will expand SickKids’ use of Microsoft Azure as its primary cloud platform, creating a more connected and scalable digital environment for clinical systems, research and hospital operations.

The partnership will explore how AI and advanced analytics can help clinicians identify patterns in medical data, support earlier insights and develop more personalised approaches to diagnosing and treating children. The initiative also includes strengthening digital skills among hospital staff.

Cybersecurity and data protection are central to the project. Microsoft will support SickKids’ cloud transformation through technology resources, Azure credits and training opportunities, helping the hospital modernise its digital infrastructure while protecting sensitive clinical information.

The initiative forms part of SickKids’ broader Precision Child Health vision, which aims to tailor medical care to the needs of individual patients. The organisations will work together over five years to explore practical applications, rather than claiming that new AI-powered treatments are already available.

The partnership highlights how Canadian hospitals are increasingly investing in cloud technology and responsible AI to support medical research and patient care. Its long-term impact will depend on implementation, clinical validation and the safe use of health data.
