Ontario Provincial Police have laid 12 charges against a truck driver following reports of erratic driving on Highway 11 near North Bay. The trucking company involved is also facing six charges following a commercial vehicle safety inspection.
Police received complaints on October 22 about a tractor-trailer allegedly weaving within its lane and travelling at inconsistent speeds. Officers stopped the vehicle north of North Bay and escorted it to a truck stop for a detailed inspection with the Ministry of Transportation.
Inspectors reportedly identified hours-of-service violations and serious vehicle safety defects, including braking-system problems and loose wheel fasteners.
The 29-year-old driver from Beaumont, Alberta, faces charges related to driving and on-duty time limits, record-keeping, commercial vehicle safety and operating contrary to a prohibition. The Edmonton-based carrier faces six charges concerning vehicle safety standards and inspection records.
Authorities placed the driver and vehicle out of service for 72 hours and removed the vehicle’s licence plates.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about commercial truck safety, driver fatigue and highway traffic enforcement in Ontario. Charges are allegations and will be addressed through the legal process.
