A major security incident at Abbotsford International Airport in British Columbia briefly disrupted airport operations after a motorhome crashed through a perimeter fence and entered an active runway on Saturday afternoon.

According to the Abbotsford Police Department, officers responded at about 4:36 p.m. on July 25 after the vehicle entered airport property from Threshold Drive. Police arrived minutes later and arrested a 53-year-old Abbotsford man without incident.

Airport staff immediately responded, while air traffic control rerouted aircraft operating at the airport to maintain safety. Airport operations were temporarily disrupted but later returned to normal, authorities said. No injuries were reported.

The man now faces charges of dangerous operation of a vehicle and mischief, according to Global News. Police said the investigation remains in its early stages as investigators work to establish why the motorhome entered the airport and reached an active runway.

Police are asking witnesses and anyone with relevant dashcam footage to contact investigators. Authorities have also said impaired driving was ruled out as a contributing factor, according to CityNews.

The unusual incident has raised fresh attention around airport perimeter security and aviation safety, although airport operations have since resumed normally.
