More than 100 pharmacies across Saskatchewan can now provide assessment and treatment for strep throat and ear infections, expanding access to frontline healthcare services.
The Saskatchewan government announced the expansion on September 11, 2026, as part of efforts to make healthcare services more accessible through community pharmacies.
Under the program, trained pharmacists can assess patients and provide treatment for eligible strep throat and ear infection cases, potentially giving residents another option when seeking timely care.
The expansion comes as Canadian provinces continue looking for ways to reduce pressure on physicians, walk-in clinics and emergency departments by increasing the healthcare services available in community settings.
Saskatchewan has previously reported thousands of patients receiving pharmacist-led assessments and treatment through the program.
The move could be particularly important for communities where access to traditional primary care is limited, while also giving patients a more convenient option for certain common infections.
Pharmacy-based healthcare is becoming an increasingly important part of Saskatchewan’s strategy to improve access to everyday medical services.
