Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to make the first bilateral visit to Türkiye by a Canadian prime minister, opening a new chapter in Canada’s diplomatic and economic engagement with the NATO ally.

Carney will travel to Ankara and Istanbul from October 21 to 23, 2026, where he is expected to meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and discuss cooperation in energy, mining, defence, security and climate policy.

The visit comes as Ottawa seeks to diversify Canada’s international trade and investment partnerships amid continuing uncertainty in Canada-U.S. economic relations.

In Istanbul, Carney will meet Turkish business leaders and investors, with Canada highlighting opportunities in energy, aerospace, advanced technologies and critical minerals. Canadian officials say bilateral merchandise trade reached C$4.3 billion in 2025, while two-way trade has grown significantly over recent years.

The visit is expected to put Canada-Türkiye economic and strategic cooperation firmly on Ottawa’s foreign-policy agenda, particularly as both countries pursue closer partnerships in trade, defence and emerging industries.
