LNG Canada has reached a final investment decision on its C$33 billion Phase 2 expansion, marking one of the largest private-sector investment decisions in Canadian history.
The expansion at the company’s Kitimat, British Columbia, facility will double LNG Canada’s annual export capacity to 28 million tonnes, adding two processing units, another storage tank and an additional loading berth.
The project is expected to generate more than 4,000 direct construction jobs, with construction scheduled to begin next year. The first phase of LNG Canada began exporting in 2025, establishing the facility as Canada’s first large-scale LNG export terminal.
The expansion is backed by Shell, PETRONAS, PetroChina, Mitsubishi Corporation and KOGAS. The project also includes Indigenous and local business participation, with nearly C$5 billion in contracts and procurement awarded to First Nations and businesses in the region to date.
The investment is expected to expand Canada’s LNG export capacity and strengthen connections with Asian and other international energy markets, making the project a major development for British Columbia’s business and energy sectors.
