Emergency telephone services have been restored in Newfoundland and Labrador following a widespread telecommunications outage involving Bell Aliant on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
The disruption affected voice calling across parts of the province, including some 911 calls and RCMP telephone services. Bell Aliant said it was working to restore service and advised people who needed emergency assistance to go directly to a nearby police station, fire station or hospital emergency department.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary reported that its telephone services were back online, while the RCMP also confirmed that its detachment phone services had been restored. Authorities said people could again call 911 for emergencies.
The outage also affected non-emergency police reporting lines, creating a temporary disruption to public access to emergency and police services.
The cause of the outage had not been confirmed in the reports available at publication time. Further information may emerge as the telecommunications provider and authorities review the incident.
Why it matters: The disruption highlights the importance of reliable telecommunications infrastructure for emergency response and public safety, particularly when residents need immediate access to police, fire or medical assistance.
