Canada is moving to expand access to open-source artificial intelligence, with a new initiative announced at the ALL IN 2026 conference in Montréal.

The project brings together Mila, Mozilla and Hypertec to develop a Canadian-led open-source AI foundation. The initiative aims to make advanced AI tools more accessible and affordable for small and medium-sized businesses, researchers and other organizations.

The announcement includes an initial $6 million investment from Mozilla and Hypertec, alongside support from the Government of Canada. The project is designed to give organizations greater choice and control over their AI systems, including how their technology and data are managed.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen Canada's domestic AI ecosystem and encourage the development of alternatives to closed, proprietary AI platforms.

With businesses increasingly exploring AI for automation, research and digital services, the project could create new opportunities for Canadian developers and organizations seeking flexible, locally controlled AI technology.
