Canadians renewing their passports have received a major digital-service upgrade after the federal government removed the daily limit on online passport renewal applications.

Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab announced the expansion on July 28, saying eligible adult Canadians applying from within Canada can now access the service without waiting for an online application spot to become available.

Previously, the online system had a daily cap of 2,000 applications. That restriction has now been removed as the government moves to make online renewal available more broadly.

To qualify, applicants must meet eligibility requirements, including having a Canadian address and having received their previous passport within the past 15 years. Applicants must also provide a digital passport photograph from a commercial photographer.

The online system allows applicants to submit supporting documents digitally rather than mailing original documents. Applicants can also receive real-time updates while their renewal is being processed.

The government expects most online applications to be completed within 20 business days. A reimbursement policy also applies when processing takes longer than 30 business days, according to the latest information.

The change is intended to give Canadians more flexibility while reducing pressure on in-person passport services. The federal government has been gradually expanding the online renewal system since a limited rollout began in 2024.
