Fairfax Financial Moves Closer to Major Indian Bank Acquisition

Canadian investment company Fairfax Financial Holdings is emerging as the leading contender to acquire a controlling stake in India's IDBI Bank, with the proposed transaction valued at more than US$5 billion.

The deal would give the Toronto-based financial group a major position in India's banking sector and could become one of the country's largest foreign investments in a bank.

A key issue is Fairfax's existing 40% holding in CSB Bank in India. Indian banking rules generally restrict an entity from owning and operating two separate banks, meaning Fairfax may need to sell its existing stake or explore a combination involving CSB Bank.

Indian authorities are reportedly considering giving Fairfax up to two years to consolidate its banking interests if the IDBI transaction moves forward.

The proposed acquisition comes after a long-running privatization process for IDBI Bank. Revised bids from Fairfax and Emirates NBD revived the sale process earlier this year after initial offers failed to meet expectations.

For Canadian business, the development underscores the growing international reach of Canadian institutional and private financial capital.

If completed, the transaction would also strengthen Fairfax's position in one of the world's fastest-growing major banking markets.

The deal still requires further regulatory approvals, meaning the final transaction is not yet guaranteed.
