Canada and Ireland have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding on cultural cooperation, establishing a framework for expanded artistic and heritage collaboration ahead of a major Canada-Ireland anniversary initiative in 2027.

The Canada-Ireland 180 initiative will mark 180 years of historic ties between the two countries and is expected to support a wide range of cultural activities across Canada throughout 2027.

The partnership will encourage artist mobility, cultural exchanges, performances, tours, exhibitions and collaborations between Canadian and Irish cultural organizations.

Funding for the initiative could reach up to $2 million from each country, providing opportunities for new creative projects and strengthening connections between artists, presenters and cultural institutions.

The agreement also highlights the importance of the creative economy. Canada and Ireland have already developed strong links in areas including audiovisual production, with Canada identifying Ireland as one of its important European co-production partners.

Cultural organizations are expected to benefit from increased opportunities to present Canadian and Irish work to new audiences while exploring shared heritage and contemporary cultural connections.

The initiative gives Canada's arts and heritage sector an opportunity to build international cultural partnerships, attract audiences and showcase Canadian creative talent ahead of the 2027 celebrations.
