Canada and Germany are putting new funding behind a safe-by-design artificial intelligence project being developed by Montréal-based nonprofit LawZero.

The Canadian government announced on September 16 that it plans to invest C$150 million, while Germany plans to contribute €100 million, to support LawZero's development of advanced AI designed to be more transparent, trustworthy and safe.

LawZero is developing a system called Scientist AI, which is intended to provide transparent, evidence-based outputs rather than operate around its own autonomous objectives.

Canada's investment will support research talent, engineering and computing capacity. The project is also expected to create 360 full-time jobs in Canada and establish dedicated sovereign computing infrastructure in partnership with Canadian companies Hypertec and 5C.

The announcement was made during ALL IN 2026 in Montréal, where Canadian and international technology leaders gathered to discuss artificial intelligence and investment.

The project highlights Canada's growing focus on AI sovereignty, advanced computing and responsible AI development while strengthening technology cooperation between Canada and Germany.
