Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has signed an agreement for data centre capacity in Nova Scotia, marking its first data centre deal in Canada and adding a major development to the country’s growing AI infrastructure sector.

The company behind Claude signed a lease with energy developer EverWind for data centre capacity at Point Tupper, Nova Scotia, according to a Reuters report published October 16. The agreement is intended to support Anthropic’s expanding computing needs as demand for its AI services grows.

Separately, EverWind has outlined plans to invest more than C$10 billion in a data centre campus and wind power projects in Nova Scotia, describing the proposed investment as the largest privately funded investment in the province’s history. The broader plan combines digital infrastructure with renewable energy development.

The announcement also highlights a key challenge facing the AI industry: large data centres require substantial electricity and water resources. Anthropic’s Canadian public policy lead said the company intends to protect ratepayers and water resources while ensuring local communities benefit.

The deal could strengthen Nova Scotia’s position in Canada’s AI infrastructure market, potentially creating opportunities related to energy supply, digital infrastructure and technology services. However, the lease announcement does not mean the entire proposed C$10 billion development has already been built or completed.

The next steps will depend on project implementation, infrastructure development and how the companies address local energy, water and community concerns.
