Artificial intelligence company Anthropic appears to be stepping up its plans for Canadian AI infrastructure, with recent job postings pointing toward a major expansion of computing capacity.

According to reporting by BetaKit, Anthropic is recruiting for roles including a community engagement manager and national compute lead as it explores bringing “gigawatts of compute” to Canada. Alberta has emerged as a potential location for the company's data centre ambitions.

The development comes as demand for AI data centres, advanced computing and electricity continues to accelerate worldwide.

Large AI models require enormous amounts of computing power, making access to reliable electricity and suitable data-centre locations increasingly important for technology companies.

For Alberta, potential investment from a major AI company could create opportunities across data centres, energy infrastructure, engineering, construction and technology services.

The development also fits into Canada's broader effort to build domestic AI capacity and attract international technology investment.

However, large-scale AI infrastructure brings challenges, including electricity demand, grid capacity, land use and environmental considerations.
