The Canadian federal government has opened applications for more than C$430 million in apprenticeship and skilled-trades training funding over five years, as Ottawa looks to strengthen the workforce needed for housing, infrastructure and major economic projects.
Announced on October 15 through the Union Training and Innovation Program, the initiative is designed to help eligible organizations expand training centres, improve apprenticeship pathways and purchase modern equipment. The government says the investment forms part of its broader Team Canada Strong workforce strategy.
The funding includes approximately C$197.2 million for training infrastructure, C$135 million for apprenticeship innovation and C$100 million for training equipment. Ottawa has also temporarily increased its maximum contribution toward eligible training equipment purchases from 50% to 70%.
Organizations interested in expanding training facilities must submit expressions of interest by November 12, 2026, for projects that could begin in spring 2027. Applications for innovative apprenticeship initiatives are due December 17, while the equipment funding stream has an open-ended application process.
The government estimates that Canada will face more than 1.4 million skilled-trades job openings between 2024 and 2033, increasing pressure to prepare workers for construction, energy and infrastructure projects.
The announcement puts workforce development at the centre of Ottawa’s economic agenda. However, the funding is available through application processes, so individual organizations must qualify before receiving support.
