TORONTO — Canada’s quantum technology sector is moving into a new healthcare frontier as Xanadu and the University of Alberta launch research exploring how quantum computing could improve cancer treatment development.

The Toronto-based quantum technology company and the university have formed a strategic research partnership focused on using quantum algorithms to investigate light-activated cancer treatments.

The project will examine whether quantum computing can help researchers model complex molecular interactions more efficiently, potentially supporting the development of new therapies.

The collaboration adds to Canada's growing position in quantum technology, an area where Canadian companies and research institutions have developed significant expertise. Canada has also identified quantum computing, communications and sensing as strategic areas under its National Quantum Strategy.

The research illustrates how Canada's quantum sector is increasingly looking beyond computing hardware toward practical applications in healthcare, drug discovery and advanced scientific research.

If successful, quantum-powered modelling could eventually give researchers new tools for studying difficult biological problems and accelerating early-stage treatment research.
