One of the Canadian citizens or permanent residents reported missing following catastrophic flooding in Nepal has been found safe, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand confirmed.

The individual had been unreachable because of widespread communication outages in the disaster-hit region and was able to make contact with authorities on Tuesday.

The flooding occurred about a week ago in Nepal's Himalayan border region with China after the collapse of a glacier triggered devastating flash floods. The disaster has left more than 1,100 people dead and thousands more missing.

Nepal's Foreign Ministry has reported that approximately 590 foreign nationals from 39 countries remain unaccounted for as authorities continue search-and-rescue operations in affected areas.

Anand said Canada is preparing to provide additional assistance to communities affected by the disaster. More than 18,000 emergency relief items from Canadian Red Cross stockpiles will be sent to the region.

The Canadian government has also pledged $5 million in humanitarian assistance to support emergency response and relief efforts.

Rescue teams, including Nepal Army personnel, continue working to locate missing people and deliver essential supplies to communities affected by the flooding.
