Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has held talks with Guyanese President Mohamed Irfaan Ali to explore closer trade, investment and diplomatic cooperation, as Ottawa looks to strengthen its international partnerships.

The conversation took place on October 14, 2026, according to the Prime Minister’s Office. Both leaders discussed opportunities to deepen economic ties, including through the Canada–Guyana Memorandum of Understanding involving the Canadian Commercial Corporation.

Carney also praised Ali’s leadership on environmental protection and biodiversity conservation, signalling that environmental priorities remain part of the countries’ bilateral discussions.

The leaders agreed to remain in close contact ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, scheduled to take place in Antigua and Barbuda next month. The gathering is expected to bring Commonwealth leaders together to discuss shared international priorities.

Although the October 14 conversation did not announce a new trade agreement or a specific investment package, it highlights Canada’s ongoing efforts to expand diplomatic engagement and identify opportunities for Canadian businesses abroad.
