OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party has swept all three federal by-elections held across Canada, delivering a significant political boost to the government and a setback for the Conservative opposition.

The Liberals won Chicoutimi–Le Fjord in Quebec, Beaches–East York in Toronto and North Vancouver–Capilano in British Columbia in Monday’s voting.

The Quebec result attracted particular attention because the riding had traditionally been a strong Conservative area. Liberal candidate Daniel Gobeil captured the seat, highlighting the party’s ability to make gains beyond its traditional urban strongholds.

The victories give the Liberals 173 seats in the 343-member House of Commons, strengthening Carney’s parliamentary position. The results also represent an important setback for Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, whose party had hoped to make gains during the by-elections.

The vote comes amid intense debate over Canada’s response to the U.S.-Canada trade conflict, with Carney’s government taking a tougher position toward Washington and seeking stronger economic relationships with Europe and other international partners.

The three victories give Carney valuable political momentum as Parliament prepares for another period of debate over trade, the economy and Canada’s response to U.S. tariffs.
