Canada is preparing for another seasonal respiratory-virus period as new national guidance on influenza vaccination for 2026–27 is released.

The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) has updated its annual seasonal influenza vaccine statement, incorporating new evidence on vaccination timing and other considerations for the upcoming flu season.

NACI’s overall recommendation remains unchanged: annual influenza vaccination should be offered to everyone aged six months and older who does not have a contraindication.

The updated guidance also examines evidence concerning the decline in vaccine effectiveness during the influenza season, an issue that can influence the timing of seasonal vaccination programs.

Health officials are urging Canadians to prepare as children return to school and seasonal respiratory illnesses become more common. Increased circulation of influenza and other respiratory viruses can put additional pressure on healthcare services.

The updated recommendations provide provinces, territories and healthcare providers with national guidance as they prepare their 2026–27 influenza vaccination programs.

For Canadians, the message is clear: seasonal flu vaccination remains a key part of Canada's public-health strategy ahead of the winter respiratory season.
