Canada’s House of Commons has resumed its fall sitting, with the federal government introducing legislation focused on speeding up major projects and strengthening Canada’s economic framework.
The legislation is part of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s “Building Canada Strong” agenda and comes after federal consultations on major projects, trade and transportation, and labour relations.
One major proposal is to establish a framework aimed at ensuring federal reviews and decision-making for major projects take no more than one year, once all required information has been provided. The government says the reforms would also streamline permits and approvals while maintaining environmental standards and respecting Indigenous rights.
The government is also proposing changes involving Canada’s Labour Code, including reforms to the process used when labour disputes create prolonged work stoppages. The issue has attracted attention from both labour organizations and business representatives.
The return of Parliament also brings renewed debate over the federal budget, affordability, U.S.-Canada trade relations and Canada’s proposed closer economic relationship with Europe.
The legislation will now face parliamentary debate and scrutiny as MPs begin the fall session.
